Every person’s journey with a neuroendocrine tumour (NET) is completely unique. Because these tumours grow differently in everyone, your care plan is built specifically for you. Below are the primary treatments we offer, structured from your initial care to advanced therapies.

First-Line Therapy: Somatostatin Analogues (SSAs)

For many patients, the first step in managing a neuroendocrine tumour involves monthly injections called Somatostatin Analogues. These include medications such as Lanreotide and Sandostatin LAR.

  • How they work: These treatments help control the overproduction of hormones that cause uncomfortable symptoms like flushing and diarrhoea. They can also effectively slow down or pause the growth of the tumour itself.

  • Treatment at Home: We know that spending unnecessary time in hospitals can be exhausting. Once you are safely settled on this medication, we can arrange for these injections to be administered in the comfort of your own home by a trained community nurse, or teach you or a family member how to do it.

Advanced and Targeted Therapies (For Progressive NETs)

If a tumour begins to change or grow (progressive NETs), our Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) will immediately review your care and introduce next-stage treatments.

  • Targeted Molecular Therapy (PRRT):

As a regional specialist center, we are proud to offer state-of-the-art Lutetium-177 ($^{177}\text{Lu}$) Radionuclide Therapy at Colchester Hospital. This cutting-edge treatment delivers targeted radiation directly to the cancer cells, destroying them from the inside out while leaving surrounding healthy tissues safe.

  • Targeted Chemotherapy:

We offer specialized oral or intravenous medications designed to target specific proteins or pathways inside cancer cells, stopping them from multiplying.

  • Radiotherapy:

Using precise, high-energy beams to target and shrink specific tumour sites, helping to control the disease and relieve any physical pain or discomfort.
